For reasons that are certainly understandable, if not excusable, historians of the early Christian church have tended to avoid the clear evidence for pagan trinities.

Abstract

These pages, How Darius Founded Judaism (9 MB), explain how Judaism was created by the Persians in the fifth century. Colonists were deported into Yehud. Their reward was to have control of a temple state which collected taxes for Persia. Only priests of the temple state were Jews—a nation of priests. The history of the Jews was invented from Assyrian records and imagination, to show the native people as apostates who had to obey God diligently to atone for their past failings.

Biblical theology is a subject in decline. The evidence of this decline is not so much the permanent crisis in which it seems to have settled, or the lack of a new consensus to replace the great works of Eichrodt or von Rad. Rather the decline is evident in the fact that an increasing number of scholars no longer regard theology as the ultimate focus of biblical studies, or even as a necessary dimension of those studies at all.
John J Collins in The Hebrew Bible and Its Interpreters (1990)

Before you go, think about this…

A famous fresco in the Naples Museum depicts a priest of Isis standing before the holy place (“cella”, whence “cancella” and chancel) of her temple offering to the congregation for worship a pyx pf water from the sacred Nile. Father Delehaye notes that it can hardly be distinguished from the typical attitude of any ancient or modern Christian vicar.
